Key Features
- Underslung Octave Mechanism: The neck features an "underslung" octave key mechanism, which was a hallmark of Buescher 400 models.
- Unique Bell Design: The horn has a wide-arc bow and an abrupt, wide bell flare, designed to improve clarity and response in the low register.
- Rear-Mounted Bell Keys: On this specific model, the low B and Bb keys are mounted on the back of the bell tube, a design choice to avoid muffling the tones with the player's body.
- Construction: It features high key posts to increase tone space and improve venting, as well as long rods and cross hinges made from durable nickel silver.
- Proprietary Mechanics: It uses Buescher's patented Snap-On Pads with metal resonators and Norton screw-in style springs, a distinctive feature of the era.
- Finish/Engraving: The keywork is typically nickel-plated, and the body has a classic lacquer finish. The elaborate "Top Hat and Cane" engraving was generally omitted from these later models, though some may have simpler "Buescher 400" or floral engraving.
